Mexic-Arte Museum has served as a pipeline for the professional development of emerging Latinx artists and arts administrators, as well as given a spotlight to established Latinx artists. The Museum aims to train the next generation of museum professionals by offering career opportunities that equip individuals with the necessary skills to thrive as members of the arts professional workforce, creating a new generation of Latinx leadership in Central Texas and beyond.
Interns can learn about museum practice through the program and gain professional skills in various fields. In addition to developing their skills through projects in various departments, our interns join a community of fellow interns and staff at Mexic-Arte.
Through the Latino Museum Internship Expansion Project, Mexic-Arte supports museum-based undergraduate internship programs designed to advance individuals’ careers in studying American Latinx life, art, history, and culture. Mexic-Arte recognizes the importance of interns and seeks flexible, positive, organized, and self-motivated candidates who can work independently and collaboratively in a professional setting. Interns will apply their creativity, critical thinking skills, and enthusiasm to various projects under the mentorship of Mexic-Arte Museum professionals. We strongly encourage applications from students who identify as members of underrepresented groups in the museum field and the arts.
Program Information
Spring, summer, and fall internships run for ten weeks with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week during office hours (Monday-Thursday 9 am-6 pm and Friday 9 am-5 pm).
Pay rate: $20/h

Curatorial
Through fostering diversity and embracing cross-cultural understanding, Mexic-Arte has created a space by and for Mexican Americans in central Texas. Interns will gain an international, national, and local perspective of traditional and contemporary Mexican and Latinx/a/o/e art through researching artists, helping with exhibition proposals, assisting with exhibition archives, and general departmental support.
Collections
Working collaboratively with the department’s Registrar, the Collections intern will assist in enhancing and increasing the accessibility of the Mexic-Arte’s Permanent Collection. The intern will gain hands-on experience in cataloging, data entry, photographing artworks, and researching the Permanent Collection. Specifically, the Collections intern will work on standardizing existing records and digitizing new artworks and cultural materials, helping to make the collection accessible to the general public.
Digital Media
The Digital Media intern will assist in organizing assets for archiving past exhibitions and events. Working closely with the Collections team, interns will learn how to photograph and archive high-quality images for Mexic-Arte’s Past Perfect database. Other tasks include: Strategizing with the Digital associate and across different teams to improve the website’s accessibility and ease of use by implementing UX/UI practices SEO/marketing trends, and management practices.
Education
The Education intern will assist with coordinating diverse youth and adult programs. With various programs running at all times of the year, interns will learn how to manage and connect with partnered schools to run programs efficiently. Other opportunities include: touring youth groups through exhibitions, developing curriculum, preparing for and facilitating creative projects, assisting with education outreach, shadowing teaching artists or MAM staff, and helping with program evaluation.
Graphic Design
The Graphic Design intern will assist in designing signage, programs, and invitations for the Museum’s educational programs, exhibitions, events, and more. Learning to implement graphic production standards, practices, and procedures used at Mexic-Arte, interns will work under the Museum’s Visual Communicator to produce all graphic and text-oriented content.
Preparator
Museum Preparator works closely with the Curatorial staff in the planning and installation of Exhibitions. Preparator is also responsible for logistics and production during special events, routine gallery maintenance, and assisting the Museum Registrar with collections management and preservation. Desired applicants should have an interest in both the technical (gallery prep, installation, lighting, etc.) as well as creative (visual design, logistics, etc.) aspects of exhibition preparation.
Special Events & Marketing
The Special Events & Marketing intern will assist in managing the Museum’s external communications and executing special events. This includes opportunities to help produce press releases, newsletters, brochures, email marketing, and social media content. The intern will earn hands-on experience in coordinating the logistics of large scale events. Taste of Mexico and the Cinco de Mayo Luncheon are fundraising events that will both take place in May and will require intern support to execute.
