Join the Mexic-Arte Museum on Saturday, March 6th starting at 11am CST for “Creating the Border: Art, Politics, and Stories” Lecture led by Dr. John Morán González as part of the museum’s current exhibition, Mexico, the Border and Beyond: Selections from the Juan Antonio Sandoval Jr. Collection on view until August 22nd. The virtual lecture will be live streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live and moderated by Mexic-Arte Museum Curator & Director of Programs, Dr. George Vargas. About Dr. John Morán González

From the border town of Brownsville, Texas, John Morán González is the J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor of American and English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. He attended Princeton University, graduating magna cum laude with an A.B. in English literature. He earned an M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in American literature from Stanford University. At the University of Texas at Austin, he is also Director of the Center for Mexican American Studies. His major research interest is Latino/a literature, especially Mexican American literature before 1960. He is author of Border Renaissance: The Texas Centennial and the Emergence of Mexican American Literature and The Troubled Union: Expansionist Imperatives in Post-Reconstruction American Novels. He is also editor of The Cambridge Companion to Latina/o American Literature, published by Cambridge University Press in 2016.  He is co-editor (with Laura Lomas) of The Cambridge History of Latina/o American Literature (2018), which was selected as a 2018 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title. He co-edited, with Sonia Hernández, the critical anthology Reverberations of Racial Violence: Critical Reflections on the History of the Border (forthcoming 2020, University of Texas Press).

About the Exhibition: 

Mexic-Arte Museum presents the exhibition Mexico, the Border and Beyond: Selections from the Juan Antonio Sandoval Jr. Collection.  In early 2020, Mr. Sandoval, a now retired reference librarian and subject specialist for art and Chicanx studies at The University of Texas at El Paso, donated his vast collection to Mexic-Arte Museum, which he had amassed over 30 years. The Sandoval Collection is comprised of over 1,500 artworks, many of them created by Mexican and Latinx artists. It includes prints, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and popular art from the El Paso region, as well as Mexico. The Collection also contains hundreds of publications, and ephemera. Juan Sandoval’s dedicated patronage to the arts is a monumental achievement, and his legacy will allow generations today and in the future to engage with important works. Mexic-Arte is grateful that Juan Sandoval chose to donate his work to the Museum.
