Artist’s Statement

My name is Esteban Miguel Guerra and I am a Mexican American painter living and working in Austin, TX. I draw inspiration for my work from the world around me, the various forms both natural and man made which I try to imbue with anima. My earlier work evokes a sense of traditional Japanese prints. The paintings are filled with flattened forms: birds, flowers, and figures rendered in saturated colors, bound by simple lines. My depictions of the human form strive for a sense of meditation or peaceful contemplation in the subject. The art itself is psychological, a struggle to capture a feeling of peace in paint. On a technical level, my work is evolving in its awareness and treatment of light and shadow. Colors are creeping into the darkness and the forms that populate the space are becoming more sculptural.
