Mexic-Arte Museum is the heart of Latinx culture in downtown Austin. For nearly 40 years, this museum has provided outstanding cultural programming, unique educational opportunities, and innovative exhibitions. Nearly 100,000 people walk through the doors of Mexic-Arte each year, leaving with a deeper understanding of the rich contribution Latinx individuals have made to Texas, and the United States as a whole. Internally, the Museum has served as a pipeline for the development of emerging Latinx artists and emerging arts administrators as well as a spotlight for established Latinx artists.

Internally, the Museum has served as a pipeline for the development of emerging Latinx artists and emerging arts administrators, as well as a spotlight for established Latinx artists. In 2005, artist Maximo Gonzalez initiated a Changarrito cart as a possible platform for artists to present their art to the people without having to be accepted by traditional art spaces or official curatorship, blurring the boundaries between established galleries and tianguis (informal street markets). Changarrito offers opportunities to an array of artists and those interested in collecting art. More so, the program creates the possibility to develop art as an encuentro, a moment of profound personal and collective connection between artist and observer.

In April 2024, Mexic-Arte will present Creating Encuentros: Changarrito 2012-2024, a retrospective of all artists who have completed a Changarrito residency at the Museum. Accompanying the display of artworks, Mexic-Arte will host a variety of encountros during the span of the exhibition, including panel discussions, art activities, interactive Changarrito art carts, and live performances. Your donation will support the commission of new artwork, including a Mero Muro mural along 5th Street, the production of an online exhibition, and accessible art workshops for the public. We’re excited to share this unique exhibition with you and our community, and we thank you for your support of the arts!
