Tengo el Nopal en la Frente, painted Joe De La Cruz, is the fifth of eight murals brought to the museum’s 5th Street wall in 2016. Translating to I Have a Cactus On My Face; slang for “Yes, I am Mexican,” the Museum featured three new exciting additions to its 5th Street Mural Billboards sponsored by the City of Austin’s Cultural Expansion Program.
About the Artist
Joe De La Cruz, was born and raised in San Antonio, Tx. His work is a figurative representation of objects and sites familiar to him. He draws or paints his subject matter in a traditional realistic manner choosing sites and items related to the project to provide the viewer with a frame of reference for further discussion or reflection. His work is usually drawings on paper or colorful acrylic-painted murals in public spaces. The works are intended to give viewers a jumping-off point for conversation or for sharing memories.
