About the Artist

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Evelyn Contreras received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at California State University, Long Beach and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. As the child of an immigrant family, she grew up navigating two worlds, her home and the outside world. In her art, Contreras utilizes metaphor to explore the vagueness of language. Through printmaking and fabrication techniques, she creates an optical experience that makes the viewer look at space and materials differently, creating a cinematic experience through color, light, and form. She incorporates Chicano cultural lexicons to show how coveted cultural movements have been distorted, and references highbrow and lowbrow art movements to highlight the viewer’s indifference towards cultural history. Her work has been exhibited throughout Texas and California.

Artist Statement

“Nailivic Studios produces laser-etched and laser-cut modern folk art both large and small. Nailivic is Civilian spelled in reverse. A civilian has both the right and the responsibility to change society for the best, by any means necessary. We believe in using art as our weapon of choice.”

In the spirit of Changarrito, the pop-up mobile art gallery where artists can sell their work to the public, Changarrito with Mark Puente allows the artist to bring their work to you. Changarrito cart June 30th

Artists have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location, as representative for the Museum during various Austin festivals). Changarreando expands the reach of the artist by presenting their gallery online, while allowing the option to sell merch over Instagram and receive 100% of the sale.

Evelyn Contreras featured her artwork on the Changarrito cart outside the Museum’s entrance on June 30th, 2018.
