She currently resides in Austin\, TX\, where she’s been teaching art classes and runs a small business with two other educators/border artists called Hermanas and Crafts. She also works on freelance painting\, illustration\, murals and is a full time parent to her eight year old son\, Dexter. \n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Using the symbolism and religious iconography in my paintings\, I attempt to venerate people\, objects or places that seem mundane or forgotten. I particularly focus on matriarchal figures and cultural ideas regarding women. Memories often haunt my paintings and I strive to illustrate my own feelings of longing for the past while incorporating surreal or seemingly nonsensical scenarios into the narratives. The majority of my work focuses on personal experiences\, family and my culture.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLook at Nikki’s work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChangarrito cart February 1-2 & 8-9\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Artists have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location\, as representative for the Museum during various Austin festivals). Changarreando expands the reach of the artist by presenting their gallery online\, while allowing the option to sell merch over Instagram and receive 100% of the sale. \n\n\n\nNikki Diaz featured her artwork on the Changarrito cart outside the Museum’s entrance on February 1st\, 2nd\, 8th\, and 9th\, 2020. \n\n\n\nFollow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates on original work available for purchase and behind the scenes of the artist’s work\, space\, and creative process.

SUMMARY:Media Mixer: Unseen Prints & Screenprinting
DESCRIPTION:Mexic-Arte Museum will host the LAST Media Mixer for the Unseen Prints from the Mexic-Arte Museum Collection Exhibit. Come print your very own design on a tote bag using the block printing method. We will be demo-ing new screen print designs\, so feel free to BYOStuff (bring your own teeshirt\, tote bag\, bandana etc.) to print on! \n\n\n\nMedia Mixers are open to the public with the price of admission\, and are always free for members. Admission includes all materials for the workshop\, as well as refreshments. Guests take home their projects at the end of the event. \n\n\n\nAbout the program: Mexic-Arte Museum’s Media Mixer workshops\, are a series of informal adult art-making and discussion classes for all levels on the last Tuesday of every other month. Artists are invited by the museum to create a workshop or lecture around current exhibit works and themes. Media Mixers are a unique opportunity for members of the community to get up close and personal with professional artists and their work as well as learn about art making techniques.

Dr. Cynthia Orozco is a History & Humanities Professor at Eastern New Mexico University in Ruidoso\, New Mexico. She will be presenting her newest book\, Agent of Change: Adela Sloss-Vento\, Mexican American Civil Rights Activist and Texas Feminist. The first comprehensive biography of a formidable civil rights activist and feminist whose grassroots organizing in Texas made her an influential voice in the fight for equal rights for Mexican Americans. \n\n\n\nDr. Cynthia E. Orozco of Cuero\, Texas is Professor of History and Humanities at Eastern New Mexico University\, Ruidoso and the daughter of Mexican immigrants. She graduated from UT Austin and UCLA. She is the author of Agent of Change: Adela Sloss Vento\, Mexican American Civil Rights Activist and Texas Feminist; No Mexicans\, Women or Dogs Allowed: The Rise of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement; co-editor of Mexican Americans in Texas History; and Pioneer of Mexican American Civil Rights: Alonso S. Perales (Arte Publico Press\, forthcoming\, 2020). She has written over 100 encyclopedia articles including for the Handbook of Texas and over 100 articles and letters appearing in newspapers. She has also appeared on CSpan-Book TV. \n\n\n\nOrozco is a founder of the Chicana Caucus of the National Association for Chicano Studies. She served as campaign manager of the Leo Martinez Congressional race in the early 2000s. Governor Bill Richardson appointed her to the New Mexico Humanities Council. She is currently a national board member of Unladylike 2020\, a multi-media project celebrating women of the Progressive era in commemoration of the 100 th anniversary of women’s suffrage appearing on PBS in March.
