SUMMARY:En lo más negro del verano / In the Darkest Domain of Summer
DESCRIPTION:Nobody in a Swamp\, Lorena Diosdado\, oil and oil stick on canvas\, 121 in. × 86 in.\, 2024 \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibit: \n\n\n\nThe Mexic-Arte Museum has been celebrating Día de los Muertos for 42 years with its Annual Viva La Vida Festival and Parade\, accompanied by an exhibition that honors this beloved tradition. For this year we are excited to depart from traditional expressions and embrace a wide range of cultural and artistic responses that extend beyond Dia de los Muertos and instead engage with broader themes of death\, nature\, geographic space\, memory\, and the cycles of life. \n\n\n\nEn lo más negro del verano / In the Darkest Domain of Summer is a contemplative exhibition inspired by a haunting poem by Peruvian writer Blanca Varela. Twelve emerging artists respond through painting\, ceramics\, installation\, film\, and more\, exploring death as an ever-present force woven through memory\, mourning\, and renewal. Much like Día de los Muertos\, these works become echoes of people\, places\, and histories\, inviting visitors to reflect on the cycle of life where beauty and loss intertwine. \n\n\n\nParticipating Artists / Artistas participantes \n\n\n\n\nCamila Abbud\n\n\n\nBieke Campos\n\n\n\nVia Madison Ceaser\n\n\n\nJahaira Daga Acevedo \n\n\n\nAva SUMMARY:Los Nacimientos
DESCRIPTION:About Los Nacimientos\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNativity scenes\, mangers\, or belenes are traditional elements of the Christmas season in Mexico\, especially among Catholic communities. However\, it is not necessary to belong to a religious tradition to appreciate the creativity\, craftsmanship\, aesthetics\, symbolism\, and dedication involved in assembling or creating a nativity scene. \n\n\n\nThe tradition of nativity scenes dates back nearly 800 years to Saint Francis of Assisi\, who first created a life-size nativity scene in Italy\, featuring real people and animals. Over time\, the practice spread throughout Europe\, particularly in religious settings. By the 15th century\, smaller figurines were introduced\, making it easier for people to set up nativity scenes in their homes. \n\n\n\nIn Mexico\, this tradition began during the early years of the conquest as a strategy to aid in the evangelization of indigenous peoples. Over the course of five centuries\, both the composition and technique of the nativity scene have evolved significantly. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact elements that made up the original nativity scene but usually a visual representation of the birth of Jesus Christ is present\, as well as scenes from heaven and hell. \n\n\n\nThe diverse array of nativity scenes is deeply shaped by the cultural traditions of each region or town\, as well as by the unique geographical features of the area. The large nativity scene featured in this gallery includes pieces generously donated by collectors Edwin R. Jordan and Charles H. Geffen. \n\n\n\nLos Nacimientos will be on display from December 11\, 2025\, until January 4\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Mix ‘n’ Mash - On Repeat: The Musicians Who Shaped Us

The exhibition features work by more than 200 local and regional artists\, each created on high-quality panels generously donated by Ampersand Art Supply. \n\n\n\nThe artworks celebrate the people behind the sound—legendary figures\, emerging artists\, and local musicians whose voices\, styles\, and stories continue to shape culture. Spanning genres\, traditions\, and generations from around the world\, the exhibition reflects music’s universal influence. \n\n\n\nThrough realism\, abstraction\, symbolism\, and reinterpretation\, artists capture the energy of performance\, the intimacy of creation\, and the qualities that make these musicians unforgettable. Together\, these works highlight the power of music and the individuals who continue to shape how we listen\, feel\, and connect. \n\n\n\n\n\nBrigitte Edery\, Dex\, 2026Oil on Ampersand Gessobord\n\n\n\n\n\nLayle E. Artworks may also be purchased through the museum’s Online Store. \n\n\n\nThank You! \n\n\n\nThe professional quality acid-free panels used by the artists are Gessobords\, made in Austin\, Texas and generously donated by Ampersand Art Supply.
