SUMMARY:Changarrito Residency Application
DESCRIPTION:About the Residency\n\n\n\nChangarrito is an art vending cart\, conceptualized by artist Maximo Gonzalez as an alternative to the official gallery selection presented by the Mexican cultural authorities. Faithful to their original\, informal spirit\, Changarritos exist throughout the world\, evolving as forums for the sale of original artwork to the general public\, presentation of public programs\, special curatorial projects\, individual and collective exhibitions. \n\n\n\nWhat is the Changarrito vending cart:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrue to the Mexic-Arte Museum’s mission\, the Changarrito is dedicated to the presentation and promotion of contemporary Latinx and Latin American art. Artists will have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location\, as a representative for the Museum during various Austin art festivals) while keeping 100% of sales. The time commitment is four days over two weekends\, Saturday and Sunday 12 – 3 pm. \n\n\n\nPresenting Changarrito’s virtual component:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs of Spring 2020\, the Mexic-Arte Museum has added a virtual component to the Changarrito Artist Residency\, allowing Changarrito artists to not only showcase their artwork on the Changarrito vending cart\, but also to the museum’s Facebook and Instagram audience for the month the Changarrito Artist Residency takes place.  \n\n\n\nChosen artists will display their artwork\, create video and picture posts\, sell their artwork\, and walk us through their artistic process throughout the month\, via Mexic-Arte Museum’s Instagram account (@mexic_arte) and Facebook account (@mexicarte). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApplications due December 1st at 12:00 AM CST \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApply Now!

SUMMARY:Changarrito Residency: Emily Bryn
DESCRIPTION:Sewn Apology\, 8″ x 10″\, Thread on Found Fabric\, 2021\n\n\n\n\n\n Shorts by Emsbrynart\, Screen Print on Vintage Fabric\, 2023\n\n\n\n\n\nFeeling the Ceiling Fan\, 2″ x 3″ 6′\, Oil on Canvas\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Bryn is a recently graduated full-time artist\, born and raised in Austin\, Texas. She’s the owner of Emsbrynart\, LLC where she designs and hand prints imagery about immigration and queer rights\, reallocating a portion of the sales back into her own communities. When she isn’t screen printing\, she’s at Deep Eddy\, reading a book\, or exploring new creative mediums. While operating her business\, she continues to pursue creative learning opportunities in her hometown\, and has newly been honored Future Front’s Artist in Residency for the 2023-2024 year ahead!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\n\nGrowing up as a Mexican\, queer\, girl in a multigenerational household\, I’ve always had an insatiable need to learn more about the ways I can best care for the communities I belong to. I’ve always wanted to emulate both the support I was shown\, and the support I’ve always craved. Because I’ve always honored having such a deep care innately within me\, I’ve grown to collect\, document\, and preserve aspects of my life that I treat as ephemera I can work from. Regardless of my chosen medium\, my work tends to be tied together by displaying proof of life\, emotions\, thought\, and sometimes mundanity. I find inspiration in proof of existence\, whether it’s the mark on a chair once you get up from sitting\, or the remnants at the bottom of a coffee cup. I draw a lot from a multitude of different artists and their respective mediums\, such as photographers Ryan McGinley and Nan Goldin\, illustrator Laura Callaghan\, sculptor Liz Magor\, and so on. Everything about documentation\, preservation\, and existence intrigues me and it’s lead me to be able to create full time without exhaustion.    \n\n\n\n\nLook at Emily’s Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChangarrito Cart October 21-22 and October 28-29\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location\, as representative for the Museum during various Austin festivals). Changarreando expands the reach of the artist by presenting their gallery online\, while allowing the option to sell merch over Instagram and receive 100% of the sale. \n\n\n\nEmily Bryn featured their artwork on the Changarrito cart outside the Museum’s entrance on October 21-22 and October 28-29\, 2023. \n\n\n\nFollow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates on original work available for purchase and behind the scenes of the artist’s work\, space\, and creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChangarrito Instagram Live Interview – 10/26 @5pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou’re invited to Mexic-Arte Museum’s Changarrito Instagram Live event with artist Emily Bryn\, taking place virtually through the Museum’s Instagram account @mexic_arte! SUMMARY:Changarrito Residency: Mauro Murillo
DESCRIPTION:Corazon con Flechas\, 24″ x 48″\, Acrylic on canvas\, by Mauro Murillo\n\n\n\n\n\n Indio Yaqui Revolucionario\, Acrylic on canvas\, 48″x 48″\, by Mauro Murillo\n\n\n\n\n\nJugando Barajas\, Acrylic on canvas\, 48″x 48″\, by Mauro Murillo\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMauro Murillo was born in Coahuila\, Mexico and moved to San Antonio\, Texas in 1995. During high school\, he enjoyed the SAY Sí art program where he explored creating art in different mediums including graphite\, charcoal\, aluminum\, paper mâché\, papel picado\, and others. While Murillo was pursuing an associate degree in communication design at San Antonio College\, he began to shift his focus toward fine arts\, especially because of a particular drawing class where he was inspired to consider art as a career. After graduating in early 2020\, his passion for art strengthened as he started painting with acrylic paint on canvas. Murillo had his first solo show\, Personajes Mexicanos\, in 2021. His work has been exhibited at UNAM San Antonio Texas\, Mexican Cultural Institute San Antonio Texas\, Instituto de Cultura Hispanica Corpus Christi Texas\, and The Union Houston\, Texas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\n\n“I paint iconic figures from the Mexican Revolution\, the golden age of cinema\, and other subjects from within Mexican culture. My inspiration for painting these themes comes from when I was a young child watching black and white Mexican films at my grandparents’ home\, and hearing both of my grandfather’s enthusiastically talk to me about the Mexican Revolution. The intention of my work is no only to embrace and appreciate our culture but also to invoke a sense of nostalgia and memory in the viewer. \n\n\n\nI paint mostly large canvases\, beginning them by smearing colors on the canvas. Once that first layer dries\, I then paint the subject matter\, allowing the smeared colors to help me decide my palate choice. Because many of the source images I use are black and white\, it allows me to paint with many color combinations. I am devoted to working with acrylic paint because I love the results it gives me. The fact that acrylic dries so quickly pressure me to paint fast\, encouraging my brush strokes to be intuitive and expressive.” \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nLook at Mauro’s Work \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChangarrito Cart November 11-12 and 18-19\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location\, as representative for the Museum during various Austin festivals).
